@@@ Kevin Abstract: Empty (Empire, 2016) A high school hip hop/r&b single off the Apple Music front page. Teenage angst throughout and I dig the chorus. Sounds are a little indie and a little hip hop and Abstract sports a slack, fat tongued flow in the verse but it changes with the hook where his voice shines. Things get orchestral and epic on the outro to the track though it kinda dissolves and strays at the very end.
@@@ Neil Young: Peace Trail (Reprise, 2016) Nobody can accuse Neil Young of settling for shuffleboard and sitting by the pool in his senior years. This is the first single from an upcoming full length coming at the beginning of December. It’s a midtempo, contemplative tune with a mellow vibe and a bit of distorted guitar tucked behind a tom heavy drum beat. Young’s voice sounds beautiful and this tune hearkens back to his ’70s catalog of faded rock. I’m on some shitty ass public wifi so I’m getting little bits and pieces of the track — fuck you interwebs for harshing my mellow. I’ve heard some cringeworthy Neil Young tracks in the past 5 years but this is more prime.
@@@ Power Trip: Split EP (Locking Out, 2016) I got a PR email about this band being on tour with Pig Destroyer and Napalm Death and I really dig those bands so I thought how much could they suck if they’re out with those superior metal outfits. The intro bit to the tune had a bit of a classic Iron Maiden epic-ness to it but then when the singer comes in they go full Motorhead. Most delicious thrash and I wanna go start a fire somewhere. Imma have to come back to this band as this wifi situation is a full on bag of ass. Okay, we’re back on some dependable inter webs and when this song plays through without gaps it’s more enjoyable and powerful. The second track of theirs on this 5 song EP is full on thrash that segues into a classic metal power chord explosion. Not quite as molten as Pig Destroyer and Napalm Death’s latest but high quality.
@@@ Bjarki: Lefthand Fuqs (Trip, 2016). Some left field electronic music off the apple music experimental section. This first tune (clipped below) is a mash of funk and techno and a schmear of old school drum ‘n bass with a male singer reading classifieds. Let’s peep more this first tune is a groove and not too much more. The second tune, the title track is more of a weightless space affair that segues back into a 4 on the floor beat and some tasty synth bass with a staticky scrumple in the back. There are some interesting sounds here but I wish there was more development and depth to the sounds.
