Music for 11/8/16!! The Chainsmokers, Kungs, Brownout, Ex-Cult

@@@ The Chainsmokers: Collage EP (Disruptor/Columbia, 2016). Super luscious club music you would catch on that show Power. Have you seen that shit? The main character is a club owner that is also one of NYC’s largest drug dealers who wants out of the game. It’s a mostly black cast and that’s the most interesting ascpect of this track. Mad drama. Anyway all the people in his club are booty wrapped wannabe models, scenemakers and a plethora of male douchebags. And that’s who feeds on this music–people trying to turn their lives into television shows. Get your binky and your diaper and your high end cocktail out and have a big drink of stupid.

@@@ Kungs: Layers (Universal France, 2016). Some corporate dance funk off the New Music section of Apple Music. Mo club music, oy! It’s interesting how much guitar playing there is on the first two tracks. This second tune This Girl is the big hit and it’s fresh — I can hear this pumpin’ at the gay dance clubs. I thought this track started out strong with a hot verse but kinda fizzles. I think the extensive guitar work in these tunes is supposed to evolke ’70s disco and set it up apart from your young folks all up in the computer dookie stick dance music. It’s all right.

@@@ Brownout: Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath Vol. II (Ubiquity, 2016). An old school boogie rock/funk mash that I got to via the CFUV weekly playlist email. Big guitar riffs and funky horn lines live together as one on this first tune Supernaut. And then a conga, hand drum breakdown! Regular readers know how much I can’t really stand the hippies but I will give them props for mixing black and white musics. It’s a partyistic mash but I find the guitar playing somewhat standard. If the guitar player was straight blazing I would be on this record like stink on a monkey.

‘@@@ Ex-Cult: Negative Growth (In the Red, 2016). Some heavy music off the ‘loud’ section of the CFUV weekly playlist email. Some indie/mostly punk fuzzy rock — produced by Ty Segall who is more common that herpes cold sores. The drummer is killing it and the guitar sounds are super fuzzed up with a dead zone vocalist over the top. Though I don’t love the singer these guys are kicking up a high quality shitstorm. A good listen to bury this pathetic fucking election.
