So I thought I would check out this #28 record and I’m re-introduced to why I don’t give much respect to indie rock. It’s become somewhat of a derivative genre. Happy Pearl Harbor Day by the way! I didn’t root for the Japanese, I just thought I would give a shout to war cuz everyone seems so into it. I realize on this second tune I’ve heard this outfit before, it’s al right. Next.

You may be reading this pocket review and ask yourself why is this asshole still listening to these indie rock records if he doesn’t like them? The answer to this question might be low self-esteem or an open mind or something blenderized betwixt those two poles. This tune If I Had a Dog is some pretty standard indie business. A sweet vocal melody over some perfectly crunched guitars — not too crunchy but not too wussed. Does anybody think wusst would be a good t-shirt? OK, I’m out on this record.
@@@ Hamilton Leithauser & Rostam: I Had a Dream That You Were Mine (Glassnote, 2016) More indie rock you fucks! At least Mr. Leithauser doesn’t sound like he’s dosed on Oxycodone (the whole tune) This is a more passionate indie rock — he sounds like he might give a shit about something. The vocal hook on this first track is about him having this dream a 1000 times and he repeats the hook about 1000 times. I like the crushed drum sound here. He’s lurking on this second tune. Regular readers know I don’t enjoy being a genre bitch but this isn’t really indie rock, this is undercover doo wop and ’60s soul music. C’mon don’t piss on my head and tell me it’s raining. I guess these are two former indie honchos and they’ve joined forces and made this not really indie record.
@@@ Whitney: Light Upon the Lake (Secretly Canadian, 2016). Doleful indie strum dee dum off the Pitchfork list. That’s right I might spend all day listening to every frickin’ indie record I can get my paws on and it’s probably a lot of records. The voices here are different, very high (almost falsetto). As a music critic douchebag might blow this hews more towards ’70s soft rock than it does to indie. Some mellow horn sections, a desire to please, a mellow produced by pills or purple cough syrup. It’s still hewing that way, it’s like a California sunset and watching Donald Trump take a shit in the Pacific Ocean in the orange light. Orange hair, orange light, shitting America great again!
