@@@ DANGERS: The Bend in the Break (Top Shelf, 2016). Some punky fresh metal off this week’s CFUV first playlist email of 2017. I like this first tune with its end of the rope singer and slow tempo burn. The second tune takes it up a bunch of notches and I’m reaching for the volume knob. Energy, I love energy especially if it’s not happy, capitalistic buying frenzy energy. I’m on the third tune and it’s burning but in a more rocking manner with less thrash. So they’re 3 for 3 out of the gate which is a rare occurrence and I will go for the mash of sub-genres if the energy is authentic and relentless. Imma swing back on this record.
@@@ Withdrawal: Never (Escapist, 2016) We continue peeping from the CFUV loud music section. This first tune has a bit of a mainstream goth heaviness ala NIN as well as Cure vibes. I’m on the third tune of this record and it’s not a NIN experience, it’s more of a Smashing Pumpkins art school/partially grungy record. I like my music heavy and while I like art leave that shit alone when you’re going in for the sonic beatdown. Sometimes there are egregious fuckups on these streaming stores and this may be one of them. I went to peep another Withdrawal record, the one listed in the CFUV playlist email and it’s full hardcore metal. But this other EP is up there under the same band umbrella. Who knows, but these guys are pushing some full hardcore goodies. The singer is a shouter, they sport some classic shout along vocal choruses, the guitar player alternates between speed metal single note reps and some big ass ka-chunking. The full beer soaked monty.
@@@ Alcest: Kodama (Prophecy Productions, 2016) Let’s finish up with a record off Apple Music’s metal section, a place where I have not found tons of great stuff but where I keep checking. this is a groggy thing with some heaviness, but not an overwhelming aggression. In fact it’s pretty light — dreamy, heavy prog. Let’s peep a bit more. I’m guessing this band was founded by the guitar player because he gets all the time he needs to shred and issue forth what he needs to play. These are mostly 6+ minute bangers so get ready for the epic.
