Music for 11/13/17!!! The Flaming Lips, The Chainsmokers, Social Club Misfits

@@@ The Flaming Lips: Oczy Moody (Warner, 2016). I’ve seen this record getting a lot of interwebz space and I now peep it to investigate whether it’s a good record or whether they have a powerful publicist. For full disclosure I’ve never been the hugest Flaming Lips fan. This first tune is a downtempo, dreamy mostly electronic tune with some R2D2 squanks. Let’s peep more. Lips honcho Coyne blurbs this is part A$AP Rocky and I don’t hear that funk yet (and I don’t expect to). This is closer to an electronic Pink Floyd record than it is to hip hop. Spacy, oxycontin electronica with touches of indie. I’m on the fourth tune and I don’t hate this, but I don’t find it to be particularly compelling music.

@@@ The Chainsmokers: Paris (Columbia, 2016). You can’t take a shit without encountering the Chainsmokers. They are everywhere. Their publicist has been violating my inbox for months — it’s bruised from the unwanted attention. We were staying in Paris to get away from your parents. C’mon how many young Americans are doing that? Most young Americans don’t know where Paris is. This is a piquant blend of shopping mall electro with a few rock pubes — perfect music to buy blue jeans to. One good thing about these guys, they’re really into recycling. I’ve heard this ‘we’re staying in Paris’ line 10+ times. Not even Donald Trump could make this song great again. Especially if he’s busy peeing on hookers.

@@@ Social Club Misfits: The Misadventures of Fern and Marty (Columbia, 2016). Some super alienated skitter hop off the Apple Music. I’m hearing some weirdness in the lyrics — more than a couple of references to God as well as wanting to be a millionaire by 35. Somebody also said they did a guy with no fingers so I can’t tell if this is some sort of gangsta gospel hop record or what. This third tune is a love ballad and there’s more God so I’m going with the undercover gospel hop diagnosis. I like the beats here and the MCs have good flow but the God business, well that’s a personal choice.
