@@@ Vant: Dumb Blood EP (Warner, 2017) I’m reading an article in the Guardian about rock bands starting to be political again and this London based band is mentioned. They name check the Clash as an inspiration but there’s no black music present in this first tune which sports an urgent, pumping Brit rock crossed with Nirvana’s quiet/loud move they took to the bank. I’m on the second tune and the Nirvana influence far exceeds the Clash. I don’t want to be a sound bitch but the polish on this record is really quite posh and it works against the sentiments a bit. In my humble opinion. This third tune, Peace and Love punches my ticket out — it’s really close to douchebag territory. No teeth, corporate fire but not a lot of heart.
@@@ Cabbage: Gibraltar Ape/Save the Human (Skeleton Key, 2017) A more off kilter band from the same Guardian article. More of an old school Pixies vibe with strange vocals and less corporate sounding. The singer really throws some quirk here. The second tune, Save the Human, is a slow rock ballad about the deterioration of human civilization and it’s all right. Nothing too fiery or engaging but solid.
@@@ PWR BTTM: Pageant (Polyvinyl, 2017) A last political listen out of this Guardian article. There are two tunes on the Apple Music from an upcoming full length coming out soon I assume. This first tune, Answer My Text, is old school Violent Femmes/Dead Milkmen indie. The vocal hook in the chorus is ‘Answer my text, you dick’. I’m going to have to revise the influences here as there is a ton of Weezer going on here. The second tune (clipped below) churns up the rock more with some slack rock and some identity politics. I’m not sure why these guys made this article as the lyrical focus is on teen themes (regardless of genre combinations) but hey whichever way the Guardian wants to roll.
