@@@ Battle of Santiago: La Migra (Made with Pencil Crayons, 2017) A mash of Latin music, straight jazz and arena rock that I got to via the WRIR weekly playlist emails. Think U2 on a steady diet of rice and beans. Big guitar sounds, an active somewhat jazzy horn player and I really dig the drumming. It’s a creative mash.
@@@ Ozomatli: Non-Stop from Mexico to Jamaica (Cleopatra, 2017) Also off this week’s WRIR new adds section. I like Mexican music and I love Jamaican music, don’t let me down! This first tune brings some pretty thick ass bass and a loverboy singer. He’s all right but I would prefer some toasting or some straight roots reggae.
@@@ At the Drive In: In-ter-al-ia (Rise Records, 2017) Let’s peep the new At the Drive In record to see if they can resurrect their frantic, post-hardcore heavy business. Thus far this first tune is holding its own with jumpy, frantic guitars and a generally drunken art school thrash. The third tune, Tilting at the Univendor is the most accessible of what I’ve heard. I like At the Drive in and I respect their formula but I don’t always feel completely satisfied.
