@@@ Don Bryant: Don’t Give Up on Love (Fat Possum, 2017) Old school soul off this week’s New Music notable release email. Bryant has a big voice and he uses it well to ride on top of the full soul band — organ, horn section, guitar, backing vocals, bass and drums. The full monty. The closest sonic reference would be Al Green but he’s not as romantic as Green. Let me rephrase that as the third and fourth tunes are love songs so he opened up rocking and settles into the romantic groove. It’s good, it doesn’t break any ground or re-arrange familiar sounds but he’s got a great voice.
@@@ Overlake: Fall (Bar None, 2017) Also off this week’s All Music notable release email. It is slotted as shoe gaze and I didn’t think it fell in that bag until the pair of singers came shoe gazing into the mix. I like the shoe gaze that is stormier and they do indeed blast the guitars more in the second tune Winter is Why, at least in the intro, they sing, and back into the blaster. That’s you how you shoe gaze yo.
@@@ Visible Cloaks: Reassemblage (RVNG Intl, 2017) I saw a twat on the twitter with a list of the most influential ambient records thus far this year. It is compiled by taking the most frequently shared albums on social media and this record is halfway down the list. This first tune is mad sparkle with a schmear of robot talk. I can picture Facebook programmers losing their shit over this. The second tune finds us with a female voice speaking in Japanese with a hammered marimba type instrument and more blasts of sparkle and some idlees as well. As in Ned Flanders eedly oodley. I like this third tune best of what I’ve heard thus far. It’s got an insect wing and robot talk sort of spiraling across the stereo field. Ooh, this is hot except the part I dig gives way to sighing synths and yearning robot voices. It is minutely hyper-arranged which is very pleasurable but some of the songs start to provoke the dreaded New Age feelings. At least for me.
