Music for 7/17/17!!! Roberto Gonzalez, Gogol Bordello, The Jerry Cans, Waxahatchee

@@@ Roberto Gonzalez: Introducing (World Circuit, 2017)  Old school Cuban music off this week’s WRIR playlist email.  Gonzalez is the piano player and this is great, laid-back but rhythmically hip music to kick back and rock an artisanal pickle.  Great hand drumming to go with the piano, the upright bass, the flavorful horn player and the sparse vocals.  Check this record as you sip a drink with an umbrella in it as I will be doing sans umbrella.

@@@ Gogol Bordello: Seekers and Finders (Cooking Vinyl, 2017)  A couple of pre-release tunes off the Apple Music.  I’ve never been a huge fan of the Gogol Bordello — I don’t love the singer’s voice and I just haven’t felt it.  Unfortunately, despite my open mind and ears I’m not feeling this either.  It tilts to far towards classic rock and not enough towards other world music influences.  There’s plenty of classic rock available out there.  Let me peep the second tune before I tip.  It’s an uptempo rocker but I have issues with the singer.

@@@ The Jerry Cans: Ahead by a Century (Akaluk, 2017)  Another world music rock tune but this time Imma have to Duck Duck Go this outfit.  Okay, they’re from Nunavut which is the uppermost northern territory of Canada.  I have checked their website and though I didn’t hear it in this tune they are rocking a variety of sounds and are preserving their indigenous culture.  I can get with that.  This tune is pretty straight ahead mostly rock with a slightly gravelly male singer.

@@@ Waxahatchee: Out in the Storm (Merge, 2017)  Female fronted retro indie a la the Breeders off this record that’s getting a big push.  Quiet in the verse, crunch in the chorus, homies been taking that to the bank for a long ass time.  As is the case when I hear and pay more attention to the production than the tunes that’s not a good sign regarding the quality of the tunes.  I don’t know if I’m projecting this precious emotional indie pose onto the music or if that is, in fact, its main appeal.  The singer, who I guess is some sort of indie icon, sings outside herself.  I don’t feel any emotions coming off her, I sense a somewhat hollowed and manicured performance.  Sorry indie gazers I call ’em as I hear ’em!
