Music for 7/10/20!!! Francisco Lopez, John Hassell, DJ Nigga Fox, Amazondotcom

@@@ Francisco Lopez: Sonic Fields Vlieland Movement 6 (N/A, 2020) All of today’s listens are from that Big Thief’s bandcamp playlist.  I hope the dude has some taste, I’m spending a day up in his business.  Here we have monster bucket of ambient environmental recordings done in Holland by a Dutch person with a Spanish sounding name.  A 1 hour piece, two 30 minute ones and a coupla 25 bangers but I’m checking out the first track, 15 minutes of ‘forest dip’ which I don’t think is an edible type of dip as in a cream cheese and spinach dip in a bread bowl.  Oh, how I love a bread bowl, a great white people’s invention.  This is purposeful background music and it retains something folks might think would be a a rainstorm, or wind or a combo platter but I think I hear some processing to add to these natural sounds.  Around halfway through the storm stops and it’s bird time.  I live birds more than I love bread bowls because the bird remains after the bread bowl has been devoured by your white trash relatives.  Not that my relatives are white trash, I kid.  I like this, I’m not really sure how to compare it, etc, I can see folks meditating to it or falling asleep to it, there’s a lot of that type of sonic background curtain action floating around.

@@@ John Hassell: Dreaming (Ndeya, 2018)  A surging dark electro tune that kicks off a 2018 record and I feel the eq filtering recede as other sounds start pushing through the sound hole.  It’s a full and active ambient electronic style and one I can get with.  It’s got some r&b feels to it as trippy synth sounds are pretty standard in r&b at this point in time but it doesn’t pursue a funky rhythm and uses the processing of the track partially to establish some a type of tempo.  Just shy of 4 minutes we get to peak synth, just stuffed with ’em before the dynamics die down and the rebuilding begins again.  That’s an ear palette cleanser and a cool way to get your ears some freshness to pay attention to what’s happening in the moment.  Solid business.

@@@ DJ Nigga Fox: Sub Zero (Principe Discos, 2019)  Some abstract stripped back dancefloor bangin’ off last week’s bandcamp playlist by some indie duder.  The sounds here are like cream — detailed, breathing modulated synths and I’m halfway home just off the flavors of the tracks.  It’s most definitely not your straightforward four on the floor kick hat techno business as there are rhythmic collisions in more than one place.  I hear a slight Latin shuffle in the beats, some panned handclaps, some delay created rhythms, even a rhythmic static based synth, nice shit.  Big points for tasteful rhythm shifting as well as the pleasantly discordant delayed synth layers that go over the top.  It’s an almost 7 minute banger so it’s a full serving of abstract electro, the one word vocal bit on the outro is nice.  Very pro arrangement.

@@@ Amazondotcom: A Flower, Nocturnal and Permanent (Subreal, 2019)  Dubstep — 5 minutes of it!  It opens robot-ventilator style before a thick drum machine kick enters and it feels like there may be an imminent explosion.  Starting to get big percussive synth blasts, some electro bird noises but no groove yet.  Metallic percussion added to the mix and it is starting to feel like a fragmented groove.  It’s now a full headphone track of medium sized bits connected and mechanically constructed at the same time.  Intricately put together a rhythm across what’s set up here would be delicious and mind bending.  That’s starting to happen.  Build a groove, fuck with it, fuck with it.  About 1:07 from the end a drum beat that will carry the tune across the finish line appears and the top part sort of falls away.  It feels like somebody locked themselves away to construct that interlocking track and I dig it while wishing it had a bit more chaos.
