@@@ Mark Lofgren: Black Moon Book (N/A, 2020) I got to this recording via a music publicist in the Midwest. Pleasantly ambient singer/songwriter business with just a tiny bit of psych weirdness in this first tune, Binary Memoires. Strummed acoustic guitar and an electric guitar in each channel panned out wide with no drums. I like Lofgren’s voice — it’s a bit retro and restrained but other than that I can’t describe it at this moment. The second tune continues the downer-ish tempos and large ambience but there are drums, albeit back in the mix. A shaker too! I’m not a huge fan of this sort of mopey rock but I like Lofgren’s voice and the way the sounds are presented here.
@@@ Shining Bird: Deadlands ( , 2020) I might be on the mailing list of all Australian music magazines! This is from Happy Magazine, or some such similarly named periodical with the word happy in it. From a wee bit of interwebz tooling about this appears to be a 12 minute track that is a pre-release from a full length banger due later this year. They are referred to or refer to themselves as an experimental pop band. I’m not sure how that works but I’ll go with it for now. This is a long improv track they’ve played for years and this version of it was inspired (or brought on) by the bushfires in Australia. After an extended sax solo that I’m agnostic on it comes into a section anchored by steady midtempo drumming, chill keyboards and a hard groove that includes tambourine. Tambourine is no cowbell, that’s for fucking sure. A massive shitstorm of a guitar comes in and I really like the tone on that. It’s a good track, I’m not jumping up and down but it’s a good track.
@@@ India Jordan: I’m Waiting (Just 4 U) (Local Action, 2020) Another off Crack magazine!!! A little Michael Jackson influenced dancefloor bangin’ with a hyperkinetic synth action and retro bass sounds. The vocals are carried in diva style and they are chopped and looped over a thick layer of melodic synths and uptempo unt-tss techno beats workin’ overtime. #overtime I fear the vocal hook might be looped a bit too much as I feel like I’m a mental patient in a sanitorium waiting for the nurse to show up with my crazy pills. Oooh, a break from that, that’s the best part of this track. Not super my cup of tea.
@@@ Lord Apex: Darkskies Full (E/M Worldwide, 2020) Crack magazine! A London MC that gets into some really nice sounds on this track Pharoah in My Past Life. It sounds to be an acoustic drum kit loop, simple and well presented with bizarro female angelic choir background vocals chopped and looped behind him. He’s a bit of a flat affect MC, maybe he’s blunted! #blunted There are also low mixed voices and no bass on this track so I’ll peep a bit of this second track Hell out of Dodge. A trinkly piano highlights the sounds on this track and I’m finding the sounds outshine the MC here. He’s all right but these sounds is delicious.
