Music for 8/13/20!!! Bing and Ruth, Protomartyr, Dandana, Channel Tres

@@@ Bing & Ruth: I Had No Dream (4AD, 2020)  I’m not usually a bit 4AD listener but I like the aspirational title of the track and here we are!  This is the third track on the record and it opens mad church-y.  Sounds evoking both choir and organ and I’m waiting for something more.  A drone enters into the track and I feel that.  It’s a 6.5 minute track so things can mover slower but not glacially at a track of this length.  More droning clouds but still hanging with the introductory sounds.  I need a bit more, I’m going a bit daft with this arpeggiating organ, maybe turn it down?  They have digital volume faders built right into the software these days.  I made it just over 5 minutes which I think is pretty good.  I need more action, I can’t listen to the same loop for 6.5 minutes I have shit to do.

@@@ Protomartyr: Processed by the Boys (Domino, 2020) I saw this band described on an All Music notable release email as I was cleaning up my inbox which is a very cluttered place unless I delete.  I think of Domino as being the home of strange white people rockers and this fits right in with that.  A bit of weirdness floats through this guitar driven rocker, but not too much and I’m more interested in the singer doing a solid Joe Cocker disgruntled vocal style.  Very nice guitar sounds here and drums high in the mix.  If you’re gonna do rock then that’s the kind of rock proportions I enjoy.  There’s a tiny saxophone part slipped in amongst the power chords but it’s not too weird.  I have no idea what’s going on lyrically and I’ve latched on to his delivery rather than the meaning of the lyrics. I’m checking out a bit of the next track as I finish up this post and the off kilter and high energy rock formula sprinkled with punk flavors/attitude continues.  I like it a whole lot and might actually roll back on this record when I have more time.

@@@ Dandana: Free the System (Rebel Up, 2020) I’m on the mailing list for this European world/free music label and I was cleaning the inbox and came across it.  I’m gonna do a GooglePimp search but I’m guessing there are West African people involved with this track.  A collective of musicians from the Netherlands, Gambia, and Senegal, that’s what I’m seeing.  It’s a wild track with different sections jumping around — my favorite section is the middle part when they hit the Free the System chant — it’s a mash of hand drums, kit drums, a couple guitars and a lot of folks chanting in English to Free the System.  It goes out on a long jam that underpinned the chorus section.  It’s got a bit of psychedelic flavor to it, not a lot but a bunch of delayed vocals and a messy, psych spirit to it which I think works for the track.

@@@ Channel Tres: Weedman (Art for Their Greed, 2020)  I don’t know who this guy is but I saw him featured on Happy Mag out of Australia.  It’s a blend of hip hop and old school George Clinton style funk and it’s a weed anthem.  Pro weed, that is, just to be clear and pro weed dealing as well.  The MC here is playing the role of a weed dealer in this tune itself, I don’t know if he’s slinging in real life.  The sounds here are classic and catchy, I’m agnostic on the lyrics.  Super fat bass and rhythm track with just a wee bit of keyboard garnish in well chosen spots.

Music for 8/3/20!!! fatherdude, Zorro Five, Sergio Calderon and Celi Lee, Milan Ring

@@@ fatherdude: attention please! (Deathrocket, 2020) I got to this mainstream r&b single via a music publicist email.  It’s slotted as funk in Apple Music and it opens inbetween early ’80s funk and slightly newer sounds.  It’s more Earth Wind and Fire friendly funk rather than Prince style freakiness though there are Prince type feels in here for sure.  He goes mostly for the loverboy falsetto and he does it well.  I’m most impressed with the arrangement and least wow-ed by the guitar playing which softens the track a bit too much for my taste.  There’s a full shred guitar ten seconds from the end so they snuck it in just as he crossed the finish line.

@@@ Zorro Five: Rebel Rouser (Matsui Music, 2020) I got to this via this week’s Stranded Records newsletter.  Looks to be a reissue as tracks from this record have been up on the GooglePimpTube for years.  It’s a hipster alt country/jam rock thing I think as it opens with a coupla lonesome guitars and baseball park organ playing.  This is a doofy version of a Meters track.  Some funk, some melodic instrumental playing, etc but a buncha steps from the full Meters flavor pack, this is the frat boy version.  I like the intention here but I’m not sure why I would choose this over a Meters anthology.

@@@ Sergio Calderon & Celi Lee: The Northern World (Self released, 2020) I got an email from the artist and I’m always nice to musicians who email me directly.  Major label corporate musicians, not so much.  This track opens up power ballad style with a distorted guitar arpeggio, another smoother guitar providing washes, and a female singer yearning.  I like it but I could use a drummer and I’m feeling like it’s not going to go that way for me.  Think of it as a layered textural piece and not a rocker as the guitar might indicate when you first hear it.

@@@ Milan Ring: Switch Off (Astral People, 2020) Happy Mag email from Australia!  I can’t tell from the singer pictured below in the video but my ears are telling me this is white lady friendly nu soul style business.  Wow, a lot of vocal tracks, they’re really going for a lush and full mix.  Where I didn’t enjoy the guitar playing in the fatherdude track the guitar player here has more flavor.  A listener’s enjoyment during this track depends on how much he/she likes the singer as she’s the dominant flavor here.  I would have gone for a little bit less emphasis on the singer and more on the sounds but I didn’t make this track.  Production is flawless and I find the hook in the chorus to work pretty well.

Music for 1/24/20!!! Africa Express, Kool Keith, K. Flay, Four Tet

Africa Express

This record is off an All Music notable release email from last fall. I save them and check them out a bit after release date. Africa Express is a UK non profit bringing African and Western musicians. Great, but thus far I’m not into the tunes. The second tune, The City, is a world music electro with an emphasis on South African flavors. There are a lot of musicians up in this record and I find that a bit disorienting. I like some of the sounds but overall it’s not really my thing.

Kool Keith

I’m a fan of Mello Music Group and I try to check out their releases if I have the time. Kool Keith is super old school and these tracks are decidedly and proudly retro. Track Two, Foot Locker is a refreshing change in attitude and sound from today’s menacing trap. Oh no, quite pornographic, get ready for that level of detail as he gets quite intimate with a female employee at Foot Locker. Kool Keith is a nut with titles such as Graceland and Holy Water and he seems quite interested in tight pants in his vicinity.

K Flay

I don’t know how Apple Music has this slotted as alternative and All Music has it as Alternative Rap. It’s pop and the deception is noted what a load of shit business that can’t describe its own product accurately. I’m guessing it is the justified sense of shame in trafficking in this sort of shopping mall shit that leads music execs to relabel pop cheese as alternative rap. Dirtballs.

Four Tet: Baby (Text, 2020) Four Tet up on the Apple Tracks in near the top! It’s a stripped down/chopped up techno dancefloor banger with a little glitter sauce up on there. The song title and the vocals center around a vocal phrase that gets chewed up in the middle and then served over lush keyboard sounds. It’s all right, not jump up and down material but it’s well put together and focused. It segues to bird chirps and a babbling stream which is a bit odd before it goes back to the core. Let’s call that a tinkle break!

Music for 11/19/19!!! Pat Metheny, Loscil, Sergei Bulat

@@@ Pat Metheny: America Undefined (Nonesuch, 2019) A 13 minute pre release single from a full length dancefloor banger from Metheny due out in 2020. I can’t wait for the next decade if it starts out with a bomb from Metheny! I got to this tune via the Twatter, hmmmm the Twatter. Instrumentation is piano, guitar bass and drums and opens at a firm and laidback pace. Oooh, a few flute flourishes back in that mix. I guess the discussion of Pat Metheny would have to revolve around a slightly philosophical discussion as to the purpose of music and the joy that it brings to each of us in its different ways. If you listen to music as a comfort and you want some smooth improv to help you through your day you could turn to Metheny. If you are looking for some fire to inspire you to rise above this thirteen minutes will not work for you. This music makes me yearn for flavored coffee or a big glass of red wine and a thick sweater, all things that are not part of my life on a daily basis.

@@@ Loscil: Equivalents (kranky, 2019) A twatter listen, I love the Twatter it’s good stuff. This is ambient music, I dig ambient music but I have certain things I like in ambient music and certain things I don’t like in ambient music. I don’t like guitars in ambient music, for example, they sound stupid to my ears. This first tune is a stew of ambient synth clouds with lots of motion packed into the clouds. It’s pretty dark stuff and I tend to prefer the darker ambient to the New Age stuff. The second tune is slower with less motion in the mix but it has an ominous church feel to it without using a church organ patch. Also a very nice bass pulse throbs tastefully at the bottom of the frequency range. I’m on the third tune and I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve heard thus far. I plan on circling back on this record when I have the full amount of time to digest the whole thing but this is primo dark ambient.

@@@ Serge Bulat: Kalah Folklore (Serge Bulat, 2019) I got an email from the artist for this listen. I’m not obligated to like music because somebody wrote me an email but I always treat the independent artists with more respect than I do the corporate dirty dogs like Bruno Mars and Lady GagMe. It is a three song EP that I think combines electronic and world music. It has a lighter rather than a darker feel without being to light or particularly. He takes the female singer and puts a lot of delay onto her performance making it more of a color than an outright melody. Overall it is a busy mix that percolates percussively. I’m on the second tune Idiots don’t Exist and the arrangements are really well done. A unique and interesting chill vibe is at work here.

Music for 9/5/19!!! Ezra Furman, Toko Telo, Kadr Laviansky

@@@ Ezra Furman: Twelve Nudes (Bella Union, 2019) I’ve heard Furman’s music before (I think) but he/she (he/she won’t clarify just sayin’) was mentioned in the Line of Best Fit weekly email with a new release so there ya go and I will hit it with another listen. In the first tune I remember why I returned to Furman’s music. He’s not wishy washy. You can like or not like what he does but you have to appreciate his big energy, he airs his shit out and doesn’t play it safe. He sings his ass off here and I appreciate that. Ragged, falsetto, angry, rock star and sometimes not and whichever way he wants to roll. Musically I appreciate some fairly hard rocking as it’s not in vogue and he rocks in a somewhat different manner. A bit classic rock, some punk, and even some Devo like action (in the 4th tune Rated R Crusaders).

@@@ Toko Telo: Diavola (Daniel Sprant SPRL, 2018) I saw this supergroup from Mali mentioned in a gig announcement email in upstate New York. I love African music, it’s the shit. This first tune is a percussionist, an acoustic guitar player, and an electric guitar with a female singer. The blend of acoustic and electric playing and the circular style makes for an intoxicating effect. Dizzying if you try to listen closely. If these were white dudes this would be prog but this is African people and the emphasis is secondarily on virtuousity. I tend to gravitate to the hard rocking African music but the interplay between the two guitars here is hype. If you’re down for straight up beautiful melodic playing and aren’t craving a drumkit hop all over this.

@@@ Kader Livansky: Your Need (2MR, 2019) I saw this Russian underground electronic artist profiled in an Australian music mag. It’s a bit of a tripped out vibe to the cover and the video below but we check all flavors on this here blog. It’s a tripped out disco dance thing on this first tune with a repetitive vocal loop and some big ass cheesy synth patches arpeggiating. The drums are more retro while I’m used to hearing hip hop drum machines which try to funk you right into the ground. Livansky gets into some weird electronic music here — equal parts groovy and trippy and an unusual audio trippiness. I wouldn’t call these lo fi sounds but they’re not typical dancefloor bangin’. I can see folks splitting both ways on this, I think it’s fresh while others might find it too weird.
