Music for 4/16/21!!! DJ Voices and Deep Creep, Dark Tranquility, Cuts

@@@ DJ Voices and Deep Creep: Nothing in Moderation ( , 2021) This was a Youtube/Interwebz live streaming set I saw mentioned in the Crack magazine mixes of the month for February. It’s an almost 2 hour set — if you watch the two female djs do their thing it’s not the most exciting visuals ever but the music is funky with heavy dub flavors and trippy delays. I’m no expert on the demographics of the electronic scene but I’m happy to give a shout out to the females in the booth! I would recommend this as restorative background music for programming nerds busy ruining our world with ai. Backwards me, shitting on ai.

@@@ Dark Tranquillity: Phantom Days (Century Media, 2020) A listen off an All Music notable release email last year and it’s a big ass updated classic metal sound here with major guitar riffage and a singer that growls but doesn’t descend into cave dweller territory. Also a keyboard/synth snuck in there that effects the vibe. It’s not my favorite style of metal — big arena production with some snarl but it’s muscular and I’m sure somebody is out there headbangin’ to it. Shootin’ a Red Bull into their eye, stormin’ the Capitol, you know that kind of shit. I’m coming back for a second peep cuz I take my music listening very seriously and it is indeed a hard rock/metal smashup with big production. If that works for you then have at it.

@@@ Cuts: Dissolution (Village Green, 2020) Another listen off a previous All Music notable release email I have stashed around. It’s a blend of semi-abstract synth work and powerful frat boy dancefloor banging. A processed robot voice gets up in here but low in the mix. A second layer of synths and some secondary beats get layered on the original statement and I like it all right but I’m up for more abstract business. I let the player click through and it appears this outfit is fond of the straight up kraut-y beat work. It’s relentless and I appreciate that but I could use a bit more funk/swing in mine.

Music for 11/11/20!!! Shirazette Tinnin, Mort Garson, Darren Michael Boyd, Fates Warning

@@@ Shirazette Tinnin: Freedom Jazz Dance ( , 20 ) I saw this African American female drummer shouted out on the Twatter so I thought I would check her out. I don’t know if this drummer is from New Orleans but it surely sounds as if she’s from there or has heard a lot of old school New Orleans music. A little googling and I find she’s originally from North Carolina but now lives in New York City. I like her drumming and in this tune some distinctly fusion-y keyboards sounds and fusion feels are layered over her rhythms. I would enjoy acoustic piano here but that’s just my preference. There’s kit drumming as well as hand drumming and I don’t know if Tinnin is responsible for both of those percussive elements. I dig her drumming a whole bunch and the rest of the playing could use more fire and more contrast. But that’s just me.

@@@ Mort Garson: This is My Beloved (Sacred Bones, 2020) Experimental electronic music off this week’s All Music notable release email. My first impression is that this is indie electronic as it sports a classic indie/rock bass sound (and not a synth) and there is that weirdly playful, quirky flow to some of the synth sounds. Also a kit drummer and a guitar player so I hear it as indie rock with electro flavors. This is pretty straightforward and I wish it wasn’t labelled as experimental electronic. It’s proggy indie. Not soggy but proggy. Maybe more proggish than proggy. With a dash of video game spicing as well.

@@@ Darren Michael Boyd: The Earth is B Flat (Self-released, 2019) I saw this Canadian guitar god mentioned on the indie music blog Indiepulse and thought I would throw him a peep. I’m listening bottom to top today so this follows the hard rock below and he’s a mathy shredder fo sho. This focus on guitar technique sounds really dated to me. Of course he has the right to play and pursue whatever he pleases but this was a nerd’s corner of rock music and now that rock is dormant it seems like an anachronism. Heads up, big word alert! On the plus side he has a piercing tone and a lot of energy. I dig the last 30 seconds where a bell starts ringing and he plays along with it. I let the player click through and ended up digging this tune “Music in the Murder House’ muchmore. Still shreddy but I dig it.

@@@ Fates Warning: Begin Again (Metal Blade, 2020) Also off this week’s All Music notable release email. Horns up ya shittaz! This looks to be more in the hard rock arena than the metal arena. Or the hard rock/classic metal old school area with an epic singer and plenty of riffage. I like the drums high up in the mix, I don’t like the nylon string guitars, I like the guitar tones bigly, and the vocal climax in the chorus is borderline cheeseburger.

Music for 1/13/20!!! Woodhawk, ZONAL, The Cavemen, Wolfbrigade, Red Death, Warsenal, Flatbed

Today we’re listening off this week’s CFUV playlist email in the loud section — punk, noise, heavy metal.

CFUV_Loud_Jan7

Stoner metal out of Canada. Retro, riffy with a classic 1970’s type singer. Big Arena Rock energy if you’re in for it.

Out on Relapse with Moor Mother on an electronic record. Bold! I think the first tune is a bit sleepy but the second one brings a beat and more rhythmic spoken word work from Moor Mother. System Error, track 3, brings the full energy and I dig it. Check that out!

Classic revved up punk-a-billy. I liked the first tune, Snakeskin, the best of what I heard.

Punky metal out of Sweden on Southern Lord, one of my favorite labels. A slightly polished update Motorhead kind of thing.

Metal out of Washington DC. Muscular classic business, shreddy with a punk style singer. Track 3, Sword without a Sheath, is the best of what I heard.

Classic metal/thrash out of Montreal. Track 3 Lords of Rifftown, say no more.

Noisy hard rock.
